Ian Parkinson has 30 years experience in broadcasting and the media.
He studied journalism at the London College of Printing, and worked in commercial radio before joining the BBC in 1980.
Ian reported for the BBC from Europe, East Africa, the United States and the former Soviet Union; and for several years was the presenter of Newsbeat on Radio 1.
He worked on the Today programme and was an editor on the launch team for Radio Five Live.
In 1997, he joined Radio 1 as Managing Editor.
For ten years, he was a core member of the network’s management team, responsible for transforming Radio 1 into a leading youth brand.
As Head of Specialist Music Programmes, he discovered and developed new talent (including Colin Murray, Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and Bobby and Nihal); while managing high profile presenters like Tim Westwood, John Peel and Chris Morris.
He ran the station’s award-winning Live Music and Events team, replacing the Radio 1 Roadshow with the industry-leading Big Weekend festivals.
Ian was also responsible for devising, establishing and leading the digital black music station 1Xtra from launch.
His last role was as Head of Music Development in BBC Radio’s Interactive and New Media division.
He has studied strategy and change management at INSEAD in France, and the London Business School.
Ian trained as a coach while at the BBC, with clients at all levels across the Corporation.
Since leaving the BBC, he has worked as a coach, trainer and consultant for a range of clients -- including independent production companies, leading charities, sports organisations and the music industry.
